KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD 287th SUSTAINMENT BRIGADE WILL HAVE CHANGE OF COMMAND ON JULY 11
The Kansas Army National Guard’s 287th Sustainment Brigade in Wichita will have a change of command ceremony on July 11, 2010. Col. Robert F. Schmitt will hand over command to Col. Barry K. Taylor.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at South Riverside Park, 900 North Bitting Rd., Wichita, Kan.
The 287th Sustainment Brigade is headquartered in Wichita with subordinate battalions headquartered in Hays, Iola and Olathe.
“I am extremely honored to be given the opportunity to command the 287th Sustainment Brigade,” said Taylor. “Having deployed with the Brigade to Iraq in 2008, it holds a special place in my heart and I look forward to leading the outstanding soldiers of the Brigade.”
“It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as the 287th Sustainment Brigade Commander these past three years,” said Schmitt. “Our soldiers and families have done a superb job in both peacetime and wartime missions. It has been a tremendous experience to lead these logistics warriors.”

Col. Robert F. Schmitt entered the U.S. Army in August 1983, after receiving his commission from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He served on active duty from August 1983 to July 1992, with assignments as a platoon leader, shop officer, maintenance officer, company commander and instructor. Unit assignments included the 4th Infantry Division, 8th Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division. He served in northern Iraq in 1991 as part of Operation Provide Comfort, Joint Task Force Bravo, Zakho, Iraq.
After leaving active duty, Schmitt joined the Kansas Army National Guard and was assigned to the 169th Forward Support Battalion. His Kansas National Guard assignments include maintenance officer, supply officer, battalion logistics officer, support operations officer, and commander with the 169th Forward/Corps Support Battalion; deputy logistics officer and logistics officer with the 35th Infantry Division; logistics officer with Joint Force Headquarters; and Commander of the 287th Sustainment Brigade.
Schmitt has been ordered to active duty service three times during his tenure with the Kansas National Guard, serving as the Division logistics officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (Bosnia) from 2002-03; commander of the 169th Corps Support Battalion from 2004-06; and commander of the 287th Sustainment Brigade from 2008-09.
Schmitt’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, NATO Non-Article 5 Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism (Service and Expeditionary) Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Iraqi Campaign Medal.
Schmitt’s military education includes the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, Combined Armed Service Staff School, Support Operations Course, Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.
His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
Schmitt and his wife Theresa make their home in Kansas City, Mo. He is the manager of Mechanical Engineering with Bibb Engineering out of Kansas City, Mo. They have three children, Patrick, Katie and Sean.

Col. Barry K. Taylor enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard as a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic in May 1982 and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps on Dec. 20, 1984,
Taylor’s Kansas National Guard assignments include platoon leader, Detachment 2, 995th Maintenance Company and Detachment 2, Company D, 735th Support Battalion; maintenance control officer, Detachment 1, Company D, 735th Support Battalion; intelligence/training officer and staff officer, 287th Maintenance Battalion; commander, Company B, 169th Forward Support Battalion; assistant logistics officer and deputy training officer, 35th Infantry Division (Mechanized); assistant inspector general, Kansas State Area Command; director of logistics, Land Component, Joint Force Headquarters; commander, 169th Corps Support Battalion; deputy commander, 287th Sustainment Brigade; and director of Force Structure, Resources and Assessment, Joint Force Headquarters.
Taylor has deployed overseas twice during his military career, as the deputy chief of the Joint Military Affairs Detachment in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2003; and as the deputy commander of the 287th Sustainment Brigade in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2008-09.

He has received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from Kansas State University, a Master of Science Degree in Management from Baker University, and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
Taylor and his wife Karla reside in Shawnee, Kan. He is the Deputy United States Property and Fiscal Office for the state of Kansas in Topeka.
