11-136 284th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron prepares to deploy to Afghanistan

On Nov. 19 and 20, the 184th Intelligence Wing’s 284th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron, Kansas National Guard, will finalize preparations for their deployment to Afghanistan. The airmen will load several tons of equipment upon multiple aircraft for transport to the National Training Center in California.

The 284th EASOS will deploy to Fort Irwin, Calif., to link up with the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio Army National Guard, for final preparations of the brigade’s deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 284th EASOS will advise Army ground commanders on the best use and limitations of air power in the brigade’s area of responsibility. The 284th EASOS personnel include joint terminal attack controllers, radio operators, maintainers and drivers to provide on call close air support to Army maneuver units. The 284th EASOS will deploy for approximately one month to Fort Irwin for mission specific training.

The 284th EASOS was activated and federally recognized in 2009. This will be its first combat deployment.
