The department’s mission is to protect life and property through planning, coordination and synchronization of state and federal resources, to provide a ready military, emergency management, and homeland security capability for our state and nation.

Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general, addresses soldiers of the 35th Infantry Division, their families and friends during a departure ceremony at Fort Leavenworth Sept. 12. The soldiers deployed for a year-long mission to Kosovo as part of an international peacekeeping force.

Patrons of the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson receive information about emergency preparedness during "Preparedness Day" at the Fair Sept. 8. The annual event is a reminder for the public to make sure they're ready for whatever emergency comes their way by having a home emergency kit and a home emergency plan.

Soldiers of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment receive a warm welcome from family and friends Sept. 7 as they return to Topeka from a year-long deployment to Afghanistan

Graduates of the Kansas National Guard Officer Candidate School in Salina are sworn in as second lieutenants during a ceremony Aug. 16. Seventeen officer candidates received their commission after completing 13 months of training.
