12-106 Zombie Preparedness Day/Spooktacular Safety Fair is Oct. 20 in Gage Park

It’s hard to keep a good zombie down, so for the second year, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management is hosting "Zombie Preparedness Day and Spooktacular Safety Fair" Saturday, Oct. 20, to encourage people to be prepared for disasters and emergencies of all kinds, even zombies.

This year’s event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot east of the Carousel in Gage Park. A number of first responder and public safety organizations will be on hand to give demonstrations and provide information on how to be prepared for tornadoes, floods, blizzards and other disasters.

"This event is an opportunity for the entire family to learn about how to be better prepared for disasters while also having a wonderful time," said Devan Tucking-Strickler, KDEM human services officer. "Our zombie preparedness campaign is an effort to get everyone excited about preparedness measures they need to take and to encourage them to think about the steps to take in a new way."

Participants include the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas National Guard, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Forest Service, American Red Cross, Civil Air Patrol, FEMA, Northeast Kansas Animal Response Team, Kansas Search and Rescue Dog Association, Topeka Fire Department, YWCA, Anderson County Emergency Management, Safe Kids, Helping Hands Human Society, Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging and others.

Included in the day’s events is a one mile fun run/walk at 10:30 a.m. for everyone in or out of costume. Pets, strollers and zombies welcome. Line-up begins in the parking lot on the east side of the carousel.

There will also be a HazMat Costume Contest for adults, kids and pets. Categories include Most Creative, Best Hazmat Costume, Best Hazmat Zombie and Best Halloween Costume. Contest times will be at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
