When preparing for disasters and emergencies, it’s important to plan for the whole family and household, including pets!
Prepare your pets for disasters and emergencies by including them in your emergency plans, creating a disaster kit just for them, and practicing your plans including your pet. It’s important to plan for how you will shelter with your pet, evacuate with your pet, and take care of any special needs that your pet may have. There are a lot of important things to consider when planning for your pet during disaster and emergency situations. Things to consider are:
- How will you get your pet to your designated shelter area and where they will stay while in the shelter-do you plan to let your pet be loose or do you have a crate for your pet in the shelter.
- How will you evacuate with your pet? Do you need help evacuating your pet?
- What special needs does your pet have? How do you need to prepare for these needs in case you are impacted by a disaster or emergency?
