Internship Project Duties

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking an Intern to join our Internship Program in Bureau of Environmental Remediation located in Topeka office for the summer.

The Intern position (K0243762) within the Storage Tank Section handles above ground and underground storage tanks generally found at gas stations. The person in this position will have a variety of tasks including the review of historical soil and groundwater assessments to determine if a site can be considered an official closure; utilize the new database to develop report formats; research electronic and paper files; assist with UST annual permitting and work with petroleum contaminated sites. Performance of this position includes good communication and organizational skills.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

Processing applications and working in a database; review documents submitted by contractors and consultants; and analyze documents for completeness.

Environmental Projects: Research historical assessment documents to determine if closure was achieved after contamination was removed.

Prevention: Review submitted documents pertaining to UST permit renewal; complete data entry into the new KEIMS database system; assist with reviewing sites relevant to the new Environmental Justice requirements proposed by the EPA.
