- Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes products to determine materials required and machines to be used for parts fabrication.
- Computes dimensions, plans layouts, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.
- Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining
- With proper training and verification from a Toolmaker, set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and EDM to machine component parts, verifying conformance of machined parts to specifications.
- Lifts machined parts, positions, and secures parts on surface plate or worktable.
- Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances per blueprints.
- Connects wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components.
- Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part to Toolmaker.
- Helps Toolmaker plan and construct intricate tools, dies, fixtures, molds, and gauges, where accurate relationship, fitting, and interchangeability of parts require extremely close tolerances to fits
- Fits and assembles parts involving irregular contours, large numbers of holes or numerous die sections.
- Follow work order instructions. List components repaired/replaced, and hours spent during mold PMs and repairs.
- Follow established procedure for use of inventory items and all spare parts.
- Work with engineers, managers, and technicians on special projects.
- Fills in as a Tool and Die Utility as needed.
The Tool and Die Apprentice Program is a 4-year program in which the qualified candidate will enroll in classes at Cowley Community College to further advance their tool and die career. A combination of OJT and classroom training with passing grades will advance the individual to the level of Toolmaker after successful completion of the program.
