Honoring Those Who Served
Our Mission is to provide and coordinate the appropriate final tribute to eligible Kansas Veterans, acknowledging their faithful and honorable service to the State of Kansas and our Nation.
The Military Funeral Honors Program (MFHP) is committed to serving veterans and their families. The MFHP ensures all agencies are coordinated in their efforts and that honors are conducted with dignity, respect and meet an acceptable military standard.
Our MFHP has trained teams established in various locations throughout the State to provide honors as requested. We also partner with Veteran Service Organizations if assistance is required in providing honors.
Background
On January 1, 2000, Military Funeral Honors became a statutory benefit to all veterans with the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act. The law requires that, upon a family's request, every eligible veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony to include, at a minimum; folding and presenting United States Flag and the sounding of taps.
Who is Eligible for Honors?
Veterans are eligible for military honors at their funeral if they meet one of the following requirements ;
- Currently serving on active duty or in the Selected Reserves (drilling with a unit).
- Discharged from active duty under conditions other than "dishonorable."
- Completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve under conditions other than "dishonorable."
- Discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty.
The Funeral Director
The funeral director is the cornerstone to the flow of information from the family to the MFHP Coordinator. Once a family of a deceased veteran requests military funeral honors at the funeral ceremony, the funeral director contats the MFHP office with the request. The type of honors requested, location of the ceremony, time of services, recipient of the United States Flag, and other details are worked out so that proper honors are rendered.
Also, at this time the funeral director will be asked to submit by FAX or mail a DD For 214 or NGB form 22 to verify eligibility
Most families today are requesting full honors to include firing of volleys. The MFHP strives to provide full honors when requested dependent upon available manpower.
